Which Camera is Best suitable for my Application
At EMSIS , our cameras are primarily used for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging in life sciences, materials science, semiconductor, diffraction, and dynamic/in-situ studies. EMSIS currently offers both bottom-mounted and side-entry cameras, with RADIUS software providing acquisition, image processing, and TEM control. Below we listed some common applications with the recommended EMSIS camera.
| Main application | What the camera is used for | Relevant EMSIS cameras |
| Life sciences / biological TEM | Imaging cells, tissues, viruses, organelles, nanoparticles in biological samples | QEDIRA, XAROSA, TOLARA, PHURONA, MAKIYA |
| Materials science | Microstructure, defects, interfaces, particles, crystallinity and morphology | QEDIRA, XAROSA, TOLARA, PHURONA |
| High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) | Detailed imaging of lattice structures, interfaces and nanoscale features | QEDIRA, XAROSA |
| Electron diffraction / SAED | Diffraction patterns for crystal structure, phase identification and orientation | QEDIRA, XAROSA, TOLARA |
| In-situ / dynamic TEM | Recording changes in a specimen during heating, reaction, deformation, irradiation, etc. | QEDIRA, XAROSA, MAKIYA, PHURONA |
| Fast screening / navigation | Quickly finding regions of interest and monitoring moving/dynamic features | MAKIYA, PHURONA, QEDIRA |
| Large-field-of-view imaging | Overview imaging of large specimen areas | XAROSA, MAKIYA, PHURONA |
| Low-dose / low-light imaging | Imaging beam-sensitive or weakly illuminated specimens | QEDIRA, XAROSA |
| Tomography / tilt-series acquisition | Acquiring sequential images while tilting the specimen | QEDIRA, XAROSA, TOLARA |
| Routine TEM / QC | Standard bright-field/dark-field imaging, documentation and measurements | TOLARA, MAKIYA, PHURONA |
Which camera for which application?
- QEDIRA – high-end / general-purpose TEM
- 61 MP maximum resolution

- 15 fps at 61 MP
- 38 fps at 15 MP
- 50 fps focus mode
- Excellent choice when resolution + field of view + speed are all important
- Suitable for high-resolution imaging, diffraction, dynamic experiments and demanding routine TEM.
- EMSIS QEDIRA
- XAROSA – high-resolution and high-speed imaging
- 20 MP CMOS
- 30 fps at full resolution
- Large field of view
- Particularly useful for dynamic/in-situ TEM, high-resolution imaging and electron diffraction
- CMOS technology provides high speed and good resistance to blooming, which EMSIS highlights as advantageous for diffraction.
- EMSIS XAROSA
- TOLARA – economical general-purpose TEM
- 6 MP
- ≥28 fps full resolution
- Bottom-mounted
- Good choice for routine life-science and materials-science TEM
